It's no secret that manufacturers have been shrinking grocery product sizes to keep price rises to a minimum. I loved the comparison this article makes. Would you be satisfied if the gas station kept prices the same but shrank the size of a "gallon" of gas?

Boost grocery savings with store brands

It seems that more people are buying store brand grocery items, according to this article. The article says that upwards of 60% of consumers are now quite open to buying these brands, as the quality has been going up in recent years. It can make a lot of sense to buy store brand items, if you are happy with the quality and see a good savings / quality trade off. But there are two obvious problems that can give you some pause when choosing which grocery path to go down:

1. Are you getting the best deal? Not all store brand items are going to be the same size as the brand name. So, per unit pricing is a definite requirement. And of course, price tracking is key. But that's what you have Pricebooking.com for, right?

2. Coupons. Some of the best deals you can get at the grocery store come through coupons, stacking coupons, and combining coupons with other deals. Store brands are generally less likely to have a good deal on coupons, so definitely something to watch for.
